Objective:The
efficacy of pulsatile warm saline irrigation with
gentamicin on chronic sinusitis was studied
Design and
Methods:Patients with chronic sinusitis were treated
with pulsatile warm saline irrigation with gentamicin
for at least 4 weeks in an outpatient clinic。The
severity of chronic sinusitis was evaluated by 9 symptom
scores。The
9 symptoms were sneezing、rhinorrhea、nasal
obstruction、purulent nasal discharge、postnasal drip、fetid odor、headache、cough and ear block。These
symptoms were self-scored every day. The scores before
and after treatment were compared。
Results:Between
October of 2000 and August of 2002,29 patients were
enrolled in this study。Among them,24
patients reported improvement in clinical symptoms。The
symptoms which were significantly improved included
sneezing、rhinorrhea、nasal obstruction、purulent nasal discharge、postnasal drip、cough and headache。No side effect of gentamicin had been reported by any patient。
Conclusions:This
study showed that pulsatile warm saline irrigation with
gentamicin was an effective and safe treatment method
for chronic sinusitis。
